On September 13th, our region experienced an exceptional weather system that brought significant rainfall to various parts of the country, particularly in the central and southern coastal plain. The amount of rain is unusual for this time of late summer, especially in these areas, and since the beginning of the 20th century, only three similar events have occurred.
From a synoptic perspective, this event is a remnant of Storm "Daniel," which previously hit Greece and Libya, causing a high number of fatalities and severe damage. While it is difficult to directly link a specific event to climate change, the rarity of this event and the recent increase in unusual weather events may indicate a trend of more frequent extreme weather events in this era of climate change.
