May was significantly colder than average, and on a national level, this is the coldest May since 2008. The cool conditions were notably pronounced in the north of the country, where daytime temperatures in May were 3 to 4 °C below average; compared to the historical record, this is the coolest May in this region since 1993.
The months of April and March were also below average, resulting in an exceptionally cold spring of 2026. Historically, this is the coldest spring on a national level since the spring of 2000, and in inland regions, even since 1997.
Rainfall accumulations in May were relatively high for this month in the north of the country, where 20 to 40 mm fell in some areas. In contrast, little to no rain fell in the central and southern parts of the country. The precipitation occurred mostly during a weather event at the beginning of the month (May 4 to 5), which exhibited highly unusual wintry characteristics for the season, including low temperatures and strong winds. An additional rainfall event occurred later in the month (May 20 to 21), but the recorded amounts were lower.
